It's almost 5 o'clock (hooray), and I'm (SO) ready to toast the arrival of the weekend.
Today I'm pairing my "TGIF!" with a Boulevardier cocktail. This cocktail dates back to the 1920s. Harry McElhone, owner of the New York Bar in Paris, is credited with its creation. It was included in McElhone's book Barflies and Cocktails, published in 1927. The Boulevardier takes its name from a Parisian literary magazine.
Earlier this summer, I finally got around to trying a Negroni, but, try as I might, I'm just not a gin girl. Enter the Boulevardier. It's the darker, more robust cousin to the Negroni and swaps the gin with bourbon. And, while a Negroni might be the quintessential summertime drink, the more complex flavors of the bourbon-based Boulevardier make it the ideal cocktail to transition into the cooler autumn months, which are right around the corner.
I have a tendency to overestimate the amount of rice I need to make, so that, more often than not, plenty of leftover rice remains at the end of the meal. While reheated wild rice can be just as good on day two, did you know that wild rice also makes for a delicious breakfast porridge?
Given its nutritious qualities – wild rice is high in protein, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and dietary fiber – it also makes for a great healthy (and hearty!) start to your day.
To make wild rice porridge, add heavy cream and maple syrup to a medium nonstick skillet and bring to a simmer over medium heat. The cream adds a richness to the porridge while the maple syrup gives it a smoky sweetness, both of which complement wild rice's nutty flavor and chewy texture. Once the cream mixture begins to bubble, stir in the cooked wild rice and cook until warmed through, about two minutes. Spoon the wild rice porridge into your bowl and top with chopped nuts and dried fruit – my favorite combination of late has been chopped pecans, golden raisins, and dried cranberries.
These easy ground beef tacos are a weeknight-staple in our house! Packed with flavor, delicious, and ready in less than 30 minutes.
Simply sautee the onion, cook the garlic until fragrant, and brown the meat ecig wholesale. Then, combine everything else in the skillet and cook for about 10 minutes to let the flavors come together. Done!

Homemade taco seasoning is super simple to make, it’s just a matter of combining a few spices you probably have already in your pantry you beauty. Double or triple this recipe and keep the taco seasoning in a jar for later use, it’s healthier and cheaper than the store bought one!
If you are cutting carbs, skip the tortilla and serve with lettuce for a delicious lettuce wrap.

“Charlie!” sobbed Pittypat, surrendering utterly to the pleasure of her grief and burying her head on Melly’s shoulder.
“Oh,” said Melly, her lip quivering at the mention of her brother’s name. “Be brave, dear. Don’t cry. Oh, Scarlett Zero Moment of Truth!”
Scarlett had thrown herself on the bed and was sobbing at the top of her voice, sobbing for her lost youth and the pleasures of youth that were denied her, sobbing with the indignation and despair of a child who once could get anything she wanted by sobbing and now knows that sobbing can no longer help her. She burrowed her head in the pillow and cried and kicked her feet at the tufted counterpane.
“I might as well be dead!” she sobbed passionately. Before such an exhibition of grief, Pittypat’s easy tears ceased and Melly flew to the bedside to comfort her sister-in-law Office furniture supplier.

She sank her face into the pillow again and, after a whispered conference, the two standing over her tiptoed out. She heard Melanie say to Pittypat in a low voice as they went down the stairs:
“Aunt Pitty, I wish you wouldn’t speak of Charles to her. You know how it always affects her. Poor thing, she gets that queer look and I know she’s trying not to cry. We mustn’t make it harder for her.”
Scarlett kicked the coverlet in impotent rage, trying to think of something bad enough to say.
“God’s nightgown!” she cried at last, and felt somewhat relieved. How could Melanie be content to stay at home and never have any fun and wear crêpe for her brother when she was only eighteen years old? Melanie did not seem to know, or care, that life was riding by with jingling spurs.

Tomorrow’s Friday! It has been a busy but good week. I’m especially proud that I’ve been to the gym for each of the past five days! That is definitely a departure from the terrible routine I had in December. And it’s a good thing I’m getting back in the groove, too, because I have a half marathon coming up.
This recipe is another chapter from the study of Simple can be So Good. I inhaled this Pumpkin Cream Pasta.
There are five whole ingredients – including butter, but not including the salt and pepper on top. If you wanted, you could serve it with chicken, but honestly it’s totally unnecessary.
Here’s what you need:
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup chopped red onions
4 oz. long pasta such as linguine
Parmesan for topping
a few sprigs of thyme
salt and pepper
Cook the pasta according to package directions, then drain the noodles.
Heat the butter in a large skillet and cook the chopped onions until softened. Add the pumpkin puree and heavy cream to the skillet and whisk to combine thoroughly. Add the noodles to the pan and toss to coat with sauce. Bring to a simmer and continue simmering until the sauce thickens a little and reaches your desired consistency. You can always add more cream if you think you need it.

Hazelnuts are a perfect fall baking nut. The deep, warm taste adds a great complexity of depth of flavor to baked goods. After eating the entire first batch of these, and then having to make another, I will be using them in lots more recipes to come.
One very warm (shall we say hot)weekend we made it down to Sunset's Celebration Weekend in Palo Alto. This yearly event has the magazine throwing open its doors for the public to visit its gorgeous, California ranch-style campus, see food demos, get home and garden inspiration from exhibits and talks, and enjoy some wine and music. Basically, a great kickoff to the summer festival months.

Kids found plenty to amuse them; here they turned a fountain display into a toddler water play area. It was toasty hot - could you blame them?
Isabelle looked so hot that I finally relented and let her have one of the free fruit popsicles they were handing out. Wow, was that a revelation for her - she ate that thing lickety split and held out her hand for more!
Besides the free popsicles, there was a make-your-own Italian soda bar courtesy of Torani. Isabelle got to try her first fizzy water - I think she found it a little too tingly!
After seeing how much Isabelle loved the fruit popsicles, I was inspired to make some at home to help her stay cool during these warm days. Bonus: they're great for when they're teething, too!
It could be my failing memory or the fact that I’ve been blogging for so long but I do believe that this is my first proper giveaway on Cream Puffs in Venice!
